Chapter History
By Brother Willie Martin (Past Polemarch)
(reprinted with update by Brother DeMario Tatum)
The Germantown Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc
was visualized as a means of serving the brothers of East Shelby County. In
November 1989, the first of many planning and fact-finding meetings were held to discuss
the establishment of the new chapter. The level of interest was significant enough
to eventually lead to the actual petitioning for a new chapter by the interested brothers.
That petition was filed on January 4, 1990.
To exist and gain recognition during the petitioning process, the
brothers chose the name of the KAPPA MEN OF
GERMANTOWN as their temporary organizational
name. With the process initiated, bi-monthly meetings were held to discuss strategy,
agendas, and to promote the various functions and civic endeavors the brothers of which
the brothers were involved. Temporary officers were elected and fraternity business
went on as usual in anticipation of a charter.
The initial petition contained fifteen names. However, by
the final date to submit names, that number had grown to forty-four. All forty-four
were either life members or life-subscribing members, which demonstrates each member's
long-term commitment to the financial stability and national objectives of the Fraternity.
With a commitment to community service the Kappa Men of
Germantown sponsored the following projects:
 |
Adoption of Porter-Leath Children's Home as our charitable agency,
donating $500 in March. |
 |
The presentation of $1500 to our International Headquarter's
Building Fund in April, the most donated by any chapter. |
 |
Escorted approximately 100 underpriviledged youths to the first
Memphis Rockers Basketball game; all cost absorbed by the brothers. |
 |
Established a permanent scholarship fund to encourage academic
excellence in all youths in our community. |
All projects were funded by brothers' contributions and various
fund-raisers such as our Southwind and Peabody Alley Affairs held in March and May 1990.
On the 5th of May 1990, the Grand Board of Directors of Kappa
Alpha Psi voted unanimously to approve our charter. On June 1, 1990 South
Central Province Polemarch, Attorney Mark Scott presented the charter to our brothers and
officially swore in officers, making the Germantown Alumni Chapter the second largest
chartered chapter in the history of Kappa Alpha Psi.
With a current membership of 40 brothers striving for
achievement, we are Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc - Germantown Alumni Chapter, a positive force for the
21st century and beyond.
Germantown Alumni is looking to expand its Guide Right program
to include a Kappa Leadership League. The Chapter is also making moves to revitalize
the undergraduate chapters under their advisory.
Germantown Alumni continues to participate in community affairs
and looks forward to maintaining its position as one of the jewels
in the crown of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.
